The town in the trip name is not the town you drive to

This is the single most useful thing on the page, and it is not a criticism of anybody. Trips are marketed as Gulf Shores fishing because that is what people search for and where they are staying. The boats leave from Orange Beach, immediately east along the coast, because that is where the marinas are.

Of the 6 operators on the charter operators page that publish an online booking link, all of them depart from one of 5 marinas, and every one of those marinas is in Orange Beach. Not one is in Gulf Shores. That was found by reading each operator’s own site rather than a directory, and each entry below quotes the words it came from.

What it costs you if you get it wrong is a drive, at an hour when you have no time to spare. What it costs you to get it right is checking the address on your confirmation before you go to bed.

The five departure points

Addresses are as each source states them. Where a marina appears with a short facility list, that is because a named source stated those things and not because the marina has nothing else.

What a marina is at five in the morning

A marina here is not a terminal. There is no departures board, no gate number and usually nobody whose job is to find you. It is a car park, a row of docks, and several separate businesses that happen to share an address — a restaurant, a rental outfit, a dock store, and a number of charter boats owned by people who do not work for each other.

That structure explains most of what goes wrong. The office is not your operator. The busiest boat is not necessarily yours. And the person loading ice at the next slip has no idea who you are booked with.

Parking is the part people underestimate

Every one of these marinas shares its car park with businesses that are not fishing charters. That is the whole problem in one sentence: you are competing for spaces with a restaurant’s customers and a rental operation’s, and how bad that is depends on the month, the day and the weather.

Safe Harbor Sportsman advertises complimentary parking on its own site. That tells you what it costs. It does not tell you whether a space is free when you arrive, and no page can tell you that in advance — including this one.

Meet the boat, not the marina

Ask for the boat name and the slip number when you book, and keep the answer somewhere you can read it without signal. Marinas here are open complexes rather than secure terminals, and the walk from the car to the right dock is longer than it looks on a map — particularly at Bear Point Harbor, which is on the bay side rather than the Perdido Beach Boulevard strip that the other four sit on.

One marina has changed its name

Sportsman Marina now trades as Safe Harbor Sportsman. The operator that departs from it still refers to it by the older name on its own site. Both mean the same place on Canal Road, but the signage you arrive at will say Safe Harbor — which is worth knowing at an hour when you are looking for a sign that matches your confirmation email.
