Where else can you fish near Gulf Shores?
Orange Beach sits immediately east and shares the same Gulf access, with much of the charter fleet based there. Fort Morgan is west at the mouth of Mobile Bay. Perdido Key is east across the Florida line. Dauphin Island is a separate island, and a much longer trip.
These are not interchangeable
They get listed together constantly, which makes them look like a set of equivalent options a short drive apart. Two of them are. Orange Beach is genuinely next door and shares this fishery. Alabama Point is a spot within it. Fort Morgan is a real drive west along the peninsula. Perdido Key is in another state with another set of rules. And Dauphin Island is across Mobile Bay — a day of its own, not an afternoon detour.
Getting that wrong costs somebody hours, so the practical relationship is stated for each one below.

Orange Beach
Immediately east of Gulf Shores, a short drive along the coast.
Water: Shares the same Gulf access through Perdido Pass, plus the back bays behind the island.
Effectively the other half of this fishery. A large share of the charter fleet works from marinas here rather than in Gulf Shores proper, and boats from both towns fish the same water.

Alabama Point
At Perdido Pass, on the Orange Beach side.
Water: The pass itself — where bay water and Gulf water exchange on the tide.
Not a town but a place people fish and name. Passes concentrate bait and therefore fish, which is why it appears in searches at all.

Fort Morgan
West along the peninsula from Gulf Shores, at its far tip.
Water: The mouth of Mobile Bay on one side, the open Gulf on the other.
A genuinely different position: sitting where a large bay system empties into the Gulf. Quieter than Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, with its own small charter presence.

Perdido Key
East of Orange Beach, across the state line into Florida.
Water: Gulf front and the Perdido Bay system behind.
Close enough to be part of the same trip, but it is Florida — which means Florida licensing and Florida regulations, not Alabama’s.

Dauphin Island
A separate barrier island on the far side of Mobile Bay. NOT a short drive from Gulf Shores.
Water: Mobile Bay, Mississippi Sound and the Gulf.
Reached either by a long road route around the top of Mobile Bay, or by the ferry from Fort Morgan when it is running. Plan it as its own day, not an afternoon detour.

Orange Beach is not a suburb of this page
It carries its own demand and its own fleet. If you are staying in Orange Beach rather than Gulf Shores, nothing about the fishing changes — the same boats work the same reefs through the same pass — but the marina you drive to almost certainly does. Several of the operators on the charters page are based there.
Crossing a state line changes the rules
Perdido Key is Florida. That means Florida licensing, Florida seasons and Florida bag limits, none of which match Alabama's. If your trip crosses the line, or if you are staying on the Florida side and fishing from shore, do not assume an Alabama license covers you.
The Fort Morgan ferry
A vehicle ferry crosses the mouth of Mobile Bay between Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island, which is by far the shortest route between the two. Service has historically been interrupted, so it is not something to build a day around without checking first.

Is Gulf Shores or Orange Beach better for fishing?
For the fishing itself the distinction barely matters. The two towns are adjacent, their marinas share the same access to the Gulf, and boats from both work the same water. Choose on practical grounds: which marina is a shorter drive from where you are staying.
How far is Dauphin Island from Gulf Shores?
Further than the map suggests. Dauphin Island sits on the far side of Mobile Bay, so by road it means going around the top of the bay through Mobile. The Fort Morgan ferry crosses the mouth directly when it is running. Either way, treat it as its own day.
Do I need a different license for Perdido Key?
Perdido Key is in Florida, so Florida licensing and Florida regulations apply there rather than Alabama's. An Alabama saltwater license does not carry across the state line. Check which state's water you will actually be fishing before you buy anything.
Where do most Gulf Shores charter boats actually leave from?
Marinas in both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and a large share of the fleet is on the Orange Beach side. A trip advertised as Gulf Shores fishing may well depart from an Orange Beach marina, which affects your drive and your dock call time rather than the fishing.
Is Fort Morgan worth fishing?
It sits where Mobile Bay meets the Gulf, which is a genuinely productive position and a quieter one than the main towns. There is a smaller charter presence there. For most visitors the deciding factor is simply the drive out along the peninsula.
